Project Hero is on a mission to raise awareness of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury (TBI), while making a difference in the lives of thousands of veterans and first responders, as well as their families and communities. Since its inception in 2008, Project Hero's programs have helped more than 10,000 veterans and first responders through cycling-based events.
One of these events organized by Project Hero is The Great Lakes Challenge Ride. A collaboration between Project Hero and UnitedHealthcare, the Challenge Series combines cycling, comradery and peer-to-peer interactions to help veterans and first responders cope with PTSD, TBI and other injuries. For the Great Lakes Challenge, participating veterans rode for free in the 500-mile multiday event, which took them from Minneapolis to Chicago via historic sites, civic centers and local attractions.
On their journey to Chicago, the challenge riders made a stop in our fine city. We were honored to give back to these incredible men and women with a Wisconsin-style picnic, factory tour and product raffle. Our team of volunteers served up brats, beer and s'mores to more than 150 veterans and their supporters as a very simple gesture - to say thank you to those that served our country.
